This luxury apartment designed by Gérard Faivre, creator of the ‘Art Homes’ concept, is the epitome of Parisian elegance and prestige.
Pass through legendary locations such as the Café de Flore, Café Deux Magots and Brasserie Lipp – places frequented by writers, painters, composers and political figures – and you will reach Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a hotspot of Parisian intellectual and cultural life. This is the birthplace of the French Revolution, and the buildings here are full of history, sharing an intimate aesthetic. With only one apartment per floor, and balconies along the entire facade from which to take in the views over picturesque Place Saint-Germain, it’s easy to see why, for many Parisians, becoming “Germanopratin” is a dream come true.
It was here that designer Gérard Faivre chose to create this luxury escape. With construction dating back to 1880, the apartment’s original grandeur is kept intact, with the interiors now boasting sophisticated glamour.
A self-proclaimed perfectionist with an eye for detail, Gérard Faivre has harmonised the textures and materials with strokes of vintage and touches of colour, reinventing the elegant spaces.
“What interested me was to keep the remnants of the past, for example the entry: marble and inlaid woodwork mirrors; I wanted to capture the era of the building,” he explains. “Here I created a bold piece of work, inspired by the past. One can find emblematic colour shades from that era: oranges, greens, blues and the shades of gold that symbolized wealth and luxury.”
The original 19th century-era doors that once closed the entrance now separate the bedroom and library, emphasising the uniqueness of this apartment and bearing witness to the past, their tint faded with time gone by.
In the lounge and dining area, Gérard intertwines his favourite materials (marble, fabric, brass, and wood of different variety) and accentuates them with contemporary art works. With its perfectly matched decorations and furniture, it’s a stylish space for entertaining.
A round Gubi dining table in grey granite anchors the room with the oval rug from Pinton and the retro-chic ‘Beetle’ chairs, upholstered in a vibrant saffron cotton velvet. Bistro-style tables, also from Gubi, provide a more casual setting, with the plush blue velvet bench seating designed by Gérard Faivre, ‘Cog’ brass suspension lights by Tom Dixon and the grand mirror giving the feeling of being in Café de Flore or Brasserie Lipp.
The beautiful original fireplace has been fully restored, a centrepiece to the subtle blend of vintage and contemporary furniture. Two blue vintage antique armchairs from 10gallery in Brussels, the low ‘Moon Lounge’ table from Gubi and the ‘Hendrix’ wall sconces and ‘Dona’ marble base lamp by Delightfull, create a cosy nook to the open space, inviting guests to relax into long warm gatherings around the fire. It’s all very glamorous, and so very Parisienne.
It’s this kind of composition that shows Faivre’s passion for creating properties with personality. “I do not like the French expression “clefs en main” (turnkey) which could qualify my work, for it is reductive and underlines a mercantile procedure,” he says. “The happiness I feel in undertaking and finishing each project is a concrete, tangible pleasure which visitors can feel when they enter the main gate of the property. One falls in love with a house immediately, passionately or not at all.”
Two elegant and sumptuous bedroom suites have been decorated with a sense of sophistication and elegance thanks to the subtle mix of materials. Beds and dressers designed by Poltrona Frau; Leather clad doors by Kvadrat; silk sheets, reflected in the wallpaper with designs inspired by silk scarf fashion designers; paintings from the Laure Roynette gallery; all in total harmony with the rest of the apartment.
Designed in the Parisian spirit of a ‘Pied-à-terre’, this stunning apartment boasts a superior interior design that transforms it into a genuine work of art. A foreigner with a love for Paris will feel instantly at home. And that is global style at its finest.
