Interior Design Showcase: A sophisticated family apartment

Shared Spaces

Melinda’s client says, “When we bought this apartment, it was bland and had no warmth or personality. We wanted this main living space to be infused with character, to be a sophisticated environment that was in no way precious – we wanted it to be the gathering place for the whole family. It had to be welcoming, comfortable and, with five boys sharing the space, it had to be able to stand up to hard wear, and still look great!”

Artistic Expression

“We worked back from a painting the client already owned,” says Melinda, principal designer at Lily G. “The dominant colours were blues and greys and we introduced black and white to add a bit of verve. The sheen of metals in the convex mirrors, and in the console table and the side table by the sofa, added sophistication. To my mind, the custom designed rug with its gorgeous opal colours and shimmering texture steals the show. It combines wool, hemp and silk, so while it is hard-wearing, it has a luxurious feel underfoot. The multi-layered textures and finishes add depth to the room.”

The sofa was recovered in a luxurious (and very hard wearing) blue/grey velvet, and is standing up to the demands of the family well. Melinda custom-designed the dining table, its glossy black surface a contrast to the softness of the sofa – given the fact that this is a hard working family area, the dining chairs are easy to clean.

“It’s a space which is equally suitable for an elegant dinner party, or a family meal when everybody gathers around the table,” says Melinda. “It’s practical without looking clinical – there is a softness to the finishes and furniture which embodies the comfort the client was looking for and delivers personality to this very large room.”
