An out of the box approach to modern coastal interior design

Kasey Johnson from Creative Co. is the talented designer behind the bespoke cabinetry and innovative interior design of this stylish and versatile family home.

“We came to be the designers for this home’s interiors through our work with Koncept Construction, as we handle all the joinery for their projects,” explains Kasey. “This was one of their masterful new builds, which provided us with an incredible canvas to work a fresh, new design aesthetic.”

The Creative Co. flair for functional cabinetmaking and interior design is on show in the beachside home, with stylish and savvy spaces tailored to the lifestyle of the owners and their young son. “Our clients wanted their home to be thoroughly contemporary yet family-friendly and easy to live in,” says Kasey. “Inspired by the home’s location, we’ve gone for a modern coastal aesthetic that suits our Queensland lifestyle.” The home backs on to the beach, so concrete floors and easy-to-clean surfaces are a smart match for sandy feet.

“The sheer scale of this job was big, with three levels and a multitude of living spaces to consider,” Kasey notes. “We’ve made sure all areas are connected visually in some way, with a flow to the design that’s focused on relaxed living.”

Many of the home’s furnishings were custom-made by Creative Co., with the dining nook a standout. Painted a cheery green, the space is used to anchor the open-plan living area. “We’ve used a thin VJ profile here, with tan banquette seating and an American oak base,” says Kasey of the effortlessly cool design. The adjoining open kitchen offsets the honey timber tones with sleek Caesarstone benchtops in Cloudburst and a concrete island bench.

Upstairs, the bedrooms are highly functional sleeping zones. The smart addition of an integrated pull-down bed in the guest bedroom is seamless in design when closed shut, thanks to its VJ panelling and slim oak handles from Auburn Woodturning.

Woodturned oak handles are a running feature throughout the home. Creative Co. has used half-moon pulls on the cabinetry in the bathrooms and bedrooms, and slender lineal grips on the outdoor kitchen.

The project was refined along the way, making it a true collaboration between designer, builder and homeowner. “These were the best clients we could ever ask for,” says Kasey. “They brought great ideas to the drawing board, which gave us the opportunity to source and design some unique features to make their ideas a reality. And Matt from Koncept Construction is such an amazing builder who is passionate about encouraging such different and unique design features,” she adds. “It was one of the most enjoyable jobs to date for me as a designer — and the one with the biggest and longest timeframe we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with!”
